The Deception
The Internet industry has tried to convince advertisers that a "hit" isn’t a single event in which a visitor’s eyeballs fell on a website home page that happened to have 25 graphic or text components. They tried to claim this viewing actually produced 25 "hits" because there are 25 individual components to the home page. Therefore, in this strange lexicon, two people who viewed the same website actually were calculated to be 50 "hits." That is akin to claiming one customer who walks through your door is actually 25 customers because he or she looked at 25 different things while at your business location. Would you buy that argument?

The Truth
A visitor who calls up a specific website (for example, mywebconsultant.org) should be counted as a single "hit" for having performed that initial function. The only way that single visitor should credibly be considered a second or third or fourth "hit" would be if that individual actually clicks on one or more interactive components of a website to gain access to the information embedded behind that interactive link. We have an extremely high percentage of repeat visitors, which translates into a strong brand loyalty.

"Browsers"
Try thinking of a website as a publication on a major newsstand (the Internet itself). Internet "Browsers" are akin to the fellow who comes to that newsstand and thumbs through 15 different publications. He then walks out without any one of the products he has scanned through. That "browser" is useless to any business that advertised in any of the publications. Simply put, there’s no imprint left as the result of the event. The "browser" is killing his time and wasting the advertisers’ investment.

Stickiness
The all-important measure in the web world. That’s what "The Stat That Matters" is all about. When people come to our website, they do so in search of a tightly knit, highly readable news, information and marketing package. They have specific "need to know" reasons for visiting our site. They stick around. Therefore, your business message sticks with them.

Anti-Phishing (pronounced "fishing")
Protection against a specific type of spam e-mail which is called 'phishing'. Phishing refers to fraudulent communications designed to deceive consumers into providing personal, financial, or account information, including account user name and password, credit card information, and social security number. These spam e-mails often create a false sense of urgency intended to provoke the recipient to take immediate action; for example, phishing e-mails frequently instruct recipients to "validate" or "update" account information or face cancellation.

Attachments
Attachments are separate files that are sent or received along with your e-mail messages. It can be anything from word processing documents to digital photos, from spreadsheets to Web pages. You can save an attachment on your hard disk to work with it as a separate file or view it later using another application.

Attributes Separate Stock
This allows attributes to have stock quantity independent of the quantity of the products to which it is attached.

This is different than the attribute-by-stock module -- that module allows one to specify a stock level for every attribute/stock combination -- so if you had shirts in blue and green, you'd specify quantity for blue shirts and quantity for green shirts.

This module instead allows you to have a quantity of "blue" attribute and a quantity of "green" attribute... the analogy doesn't really work for the T-Shirt example b/c it's for a different situation.

Audience
When designing a Website, it's important to know the audience you wish to attract and to cater to their unique needs and preferences.  For example, while a younger, computer-literate audience may quickly dismiss your site unless it looks cool and makes use of the latest technology, an older web-newbie audience will tend to prefer a well organized with good content and easy-to-read text even if its not trendy.

Audience profiling and planning phases of your marketing program will allow you to implement a solid marketing strategy.  Targeting your specific audience and understanding the demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors and purchase preferences that drive their buying decisions leads to successful marketing strategies.

  • Education
  • Income
  • Housing
  • Race
  • Travel preference
  • Automobile preference
  • Shopping behaviors
  • Telecommunications usage
  • Financial services usage
  • Restaurant preference
  • TV viewer ship

Authorization Code
Also known as "auth code", "passcode", or "key", the authorization code provides an extra level of security for domain name transfers. The authorization code is unique for each domain name and is assigned by the registrar at the time the domain name is registered. Anyone transferring domain names from one registrar to another is required to provide the authorization code to finalize the transfer. Authorization codes can only be obtained from the current registrar. Registrars are contractually obligated to provide the authorization code upon request by the registrant.

Autoresponders
When a message is sent to the e-mail address with an active autoresponder, the message is automatically replied to with a pre-written message. Such messages are typically used for an Out of Office message.

Banner Ad
If you've spent any time surfing the Internet, you've seen more than your fair share of banner ads. These small rectangular advertisements appear on all sorts of Web pages and vary considerably in appearance and subject matter, but they all share a basic function: if you click on them, your Internet browser will take you to the advertiser's Web site. Banners are the most common form of Internet advertising and are excellent for commanding attention and building brand awareness.

The Internet is the first medium that is inherently interactive. Its power depends on its ability to stimulate a dialogue between the advertiser and the consumer. Television and Radio advertising, by contrast, relies on passivity. Up to this point in advertising consumers have never had the opportunity to interact with what they see.

What is a Banner Ad?

Over the past few years, most of us have heard about all the money being made on the Internet. This new medium of education and entertainment has revolutionized the economy and brought many people and many companies a great deal of success. But where is all this money coming from? There are a lot of ways Web sites make money, but one of the main sources of revenue is advertising. And one of the most popular forms of Internet advertising is the banner ad.

A banner ad is simply a special sort of hypertext link. Banner ads are usually relatively simple pieces of HTML code, but their presence on the Web and their importance in Internet-based business is immense.

Because of its graphic element, a banner ad is somewhat similar to a traditional ad you would see in a printed publication such as a newspaper or magazine, but it has the added ability to bring a potential customer directly to the advertiser's Web site. This is something like touching a printed ad and being immediately teleported to the advertiser's store! A banner ad also differs from a print ad in its dynamic capability. It stays in one place on a page, like a magazine ad, but it can present multiple images, include animation and change appearance in a number of other ways.

Where are banner ads located?

Banners frame individual pages within a website. Comparable to display advertising in the printed magazines, banners can either link directly to your website.

What can banner ads deliver?

Despite all the bad press, banner ads can be as effective any other advertising medium - handled intelligently. No other medium has the ability to be as targeted and as contextual as banners. The fact that many advertisers have been disappointed is not a reflection on banners themselves.

Full Banner, consist of rectangular banners that are located at the bottom of popular web pages.
The full banner  is by far the most popular. Sizes can vary. No larger than 464 width x 95 height pixels.

Premier Banner, single custom rectangular banner fixed on a web page within one of our websites.
In a prime location. Sizes can vary. No larger than 464 width x 95 height pixels.

Button or "Tile" Banners, consist of smaller square banners located on the side of popular web pages.
Sizes can vary. No larger than 136 width x 136 height pixels.

Banner ad objective is branding. We've all experienced the effects of branding before. Say you see ads on television for Brand X glue all the time. The ads don't seem to particularly affect you -- you don't leap from your couch to go buy glue -- but down the road, when you're at the store shopping for glue, they may affect the decision you make. If you don't have any other reason to choose one type of glue over the others, you'll probably choose the one you're most familiar with, Brand X, even if you're only familiar with it because of advertising.

As you've probably noticed while surfing the Web, actual graphic content, or creative, varies considerably among banner ads. The simplest banner ads feature only one, static GIF or JPEG image, which is linked to the advertiser's home page. More common is the GIF-animated banner ad, which displays several different images in succession, sometimes to create the effect of animated motion. Then there are rich media banner ads -- ads that use audio, video, or Java and Shockwave programming. These banner ads, which usually have larger file sizes, are often interactive beyond their simple linking function.

Better Together, Zen Cart Add-on
Allows cross selling at a discount; a product can be linked with another specific product, another product from a specific category, or any other product, with an associated discount (in dollars or % off) if both are purchased together. The associations must be hard coded, but once they are, generic logic can be added to the product_info page to display any available better together discount.

Overview:

The gold standard of online retailing is Amazon.com. Zen Cart store operators looking to increase their profitability should constantly be asking, "WWAD?" or "What would Amazon do?"

When you look at an item in Amazon, not only is a cross selling recommendation made, a discount is offered to persuade the customer to accept the recommendation. We have added a modification to the shopping cart which permits you to offer this type of discounted cross selling in your on-line store.

You may specify the following (Below item X and Y can be the same item)

  • Buy item X, get item Y at a discount
  • Buy item X, get an item from category A at a discount
  • Buy an item from category A, get an item from category B at a discount

Discounts may be specified as percentages of the latter item's price or as absolute values.

You will be able to facilitate two-for-one offers for identical items. Although it may be argued that this is simply a special case of "buy item X, get item Y at a discount," this capability was added to facilitate two for one offers for an entire category of goods with a single statement. You may specify two-for-one type specials such as

  • Buy item X, get another item X free
  • Buy an item from category A, get another item from category A free.

A modification appears on the second page of your checkout as a discount.

Payment Page displaying Better Together Discount:

When we offer a discount on Item A with the purchase of Item B. The marketing tag line for theses discounts appears on those product pages.

Bit is short for binary digit. A bit is the smallest unit of data a computer can handle. Bits are used in various combinations to represent different kinds of data. Each bit has a value of 0 or 1. See 'byte' for more information.

Color Palette

Color is an often misused and under-valued design tool. As likely as not, a Website's color scheme is usually chosen based upon the owner's personal preferences rather than the site's audience, tone and message. Not putting the power of color to work for your Website, or the ineffective use of color, can be a fatal flaw in the overall success of your site.

The effective use of color will make an unconscious but powerful impact on your site's visitors. Appropriate and harmonious color combinations are essential in setting your Website's tone and ambience. Properly chosen color combinations will reinforce the mood set by the tone of your site content and punctuate the emotion evoked by your message.

The consistent use of color combinations throughout your Website, and the visitors repeated exposure to those colors as they browse the site, promotes product branding and organizational recognition. Always be uniform in the use, color and placement of graphical elements such as backgrounds, buttons, logos and link colors.

Computer Virus
Viruses are small files that attach to e-mails or downloaded files and infect your computer. They can be harmless (they can place a funny picture on your monitor) or dangerous (they can go through your address book and send everyone within your address book the same virus). More dangerous viruses can wipe out your computer and all your information. Some viruses can take over your machine and send spam from your computer. Without your knowledge, you can become a spammer.

Content
Consumers who come to the Web want helpful and pertinent information that addresses their specific needs and interests. They see the Internet as a utility and expect targeted, niche relevant content.  We specialize in content-focused websites. It's important to us that your site is readable, easy to navigate, and pleasant in appearance, and we bring years of experience to your project, as well as our desire to make it the best website or book we've done yet!

The copy, or "written content," should offer a balance of clarity and brevity. It should have a limited screen area with which to capture the visitor's immediate attention. Most importantly write for the customer... not the company. You may be able to borrow copy from printed publications, but be prepared to make adjustments for the web-page format.

Web typographical control is still very limited. Remember that we need to keep your writing concise. We need to stick to the point and give your information in as few words as possible, while still maintaining an interest.

Contests
Creating A Reward & Recognition System For Your Clients and Customers

You have to to promote your website -- it's not going to sell itself. Reciprocal links, local information portals, forums, appropriate newsgroups, search engine registration, as well as a press release, will help stimulate your promotion.

A good way is to host a contest. Contests and promotions are very effective ways of building traffic to your site.

Generating Sales Leads with an Online Contest

The key to success online is being able to generate a steady flow of new "qualified" web visitors. Running an online contest is one of the best ways to do this.

There are two things you can accomplish with your contest.
You can draw attention to your website or product/service.
You can generate "qualified" sales leads that you can follow up on with your offer.
"Free" is immensely popular, and when you offer something of value free to the winner of a contest, you'll get many sign-ups. Make sure the prize is directly related to what you offer if you're trying to target your marketing audience. People will give their information in exchange for something they perceive has value.

1. First, decide on your contest rules.
Decide what you want the contestant to do in order to enter your contest.

2. Decide how you find a winner.
Run your contest over a certain time frame.

3. Decide on how to gather contestant information.
The easiest way to receive your entries is with asking them to fill out your CONTACT FORM.

4. Decide on your prize.
A major consideration when deciding on your prize is that you want your prize to "qualify your entrant" for your product or service you wish to promote.

The important part of your contest is going to be your follow up after the contest draw date. You want to send everyone who played, an announcement congratulating the winner AND promoting your product or service. Do not leave out your product or service. This was the purpose of the contest, after all. You have gathered the qualified names and e-mails of your contestants so you can send them your very best offer on your product and service and convert them to a paying customer.

But most importantly, we achieve our main objective: to increase the value of our advertising space. We want to have satisfied customers and the Spot the Double contest ensures that our subscribers read the classified ads very carefully!

Put your contest into play as soon as possible. It is a sure-fire way to generate qualified website traffic.

Cookie
Cookies are tracking software, placed in a file on your computer's hard disk, that identifies a return visitor to a Website. They can also be used to "remember" user-selected preferences, such as a login, for a particular Website. Cookies are generally harmless, and many popular e-commerce sites require your Internet browser to allow them to set cookies in order to make a purchase.

Most Internet cookies are incredibly simple, but they are one of those things that have taken on a life of their own. Cookies started receiving tremendous media attention back in 2000 because of Internet privacy concerns, and the debate still rages.

On the other hand, cookies provide capabilities that make the Web much easier to navigate. The designers of almost every major site use them because they provide a better user experience and make it much easier to gather accurate information about the site's visitors.

A cookie is a piece of text that a Web server can store on a user's hard disk. Cookies allow a Website to store information on a user's machine and later retrieve it. That is all cookie data is.

The Website stores the data, and later it receives it back. A Website can only receive the data it has stored on your machine. It cannot look at any other cookie, nor anything else on your machine.

Copy
Copy is the written, typed or printed words that make up the content of your Website, newspaper, magazine, etc.

Counter
A Counter shows you how many page views or hits occurred on a certain Web page on your Website.

d

Discussion Board
A discussion board is a general term for any online "bulletin board" where you can leave and expect to see responses to messages you have left. Or you can just read the board. Bulletin board services were invented for this purpose (as well as to allow for the exchange of uploaded/downloaded files).  My Web Consultant uses JForum as our discussion board program.

Disk Storage
Your Web disk storage (or data storage) consists of HTML files, graphics, audio clips, e-mail, and all other files that make up your Website. The amount of disk Storage you need depends on what your Website will be used for. If you will only be publishing text, 1MB of Storage is equal to approximately 100 pages of text. However, most Websites include graphics and as your online business grows, you may also include interactive customer features such as forums which use significantly more storage.

Another reason you may need more disk storage is if you are offering software or audio/video files for your visitors to download. You would then need to store these products within your allotted disk storage and again, all these items will take more storage.

Design
The aesthetic and navigational architecture of a Website.

Directory Pointers
A directory pointer (or subdomain) allows you to point that subdomain to a particular page (or directory) of a Website. For example, if you registered the domain name MyWebConsultant.org an example of a subdomain would be specialpromotions.MyWebConsultant.org . In this case the customer will go straight to the special promotions page instead of going to the main page of  MyWebConsultant.org.

Discount Coupon
One of the benefits to signing up for newsletter within the shopping cart is customer will receive periodic discount coupons as well as notice of special upcoming sales!

To subscribe to the newsletter simply sign up for an account today, it’s free, it’s private, and informative!

Disk Space
Your Web disk storage (or data storage) consists of HTML files, graphics, audio clips, e-mail, and all other files that make up your Website. The amount of disk Storage you need depends on what your Website will be used for. If you will only be publishing text, 1MB of Storage is equal to approximately 100 pages of text. However most Websites include graphics and as your online business grows, you may also include interactive customer features such as forums which use significantly more storage.

Another reason you may need more disk Storage is if you are offering software or audio/video files for your visitors to download. You would then need to store these products within your allotted disk storage and again, all these items will take more Storage.

Domain Names
A domain name is really just your address on the Internet, what people type into their browser to find you. Businesses typically register domain names with their company name and sometimes also register their product names. Individuals often register family names or names that have a personal interest to them. You choose a word or phrase (e.g. MyWebConsultant) and an extension (e.g. .org, .com, .net, .biz). Your domain name could be 'MyWebConsultant.org.'

Domain names have two parts: the label and the extension, or top-level domain, separated by a 'dot.' In MyWebConsultant.org, 'MyWebConsultant' is the label and 'com' is the top-level domain.

At My Web Consultant, our goal is to provide you with a simple and secure domain registration solution. We'll handle all of the 'paperwork' to register your domain name. These days, every company from Disney to UPS has a domain name like YourDomainName.com. Having a domain name gives you a "professional" presence on the web.  My Web Consultant has a partnership with Dotster as our domain name registrar.

New or Renew Domain Name:     $35.00      Per Year

Or maybe you're not ready for a full-blown Website but would like to have one or more e-mail addresses linked to your domain name.

Electronic Commerce/E-Commerce
Also known as Online Sales Capability, this allows you to sell products or services on your website.

Selling goods and services online is also called "e-commerce." Popular e-commerce Websites include Amazon.com and eBay. E-commerce is not the sole province of large companies, however; many small businesses have found considerable success selling on the Internet.

To sell online effectively, you need a Website equipped with certain features not found on typical business sites: a shopping cart, credit card processing capability, product catalog, etc. Some web hosting and design firms, including My Web Consultant, offer Website packages tailored for e-commerce use.

If you already sell products and services offline, e-commerce can give you access to new customers, many of them in other states, even other countries. You can increase your revenue by opening up entirely new markets that would be difficult and costly to penetrate with a conventional bricks-and-mortar store.

If you plan to sell online only, you can create a thriving business with lower costs than many offline businesses. For example, you can run your online store out of your home instead of renting a retail space, and you can take orders 24/7 without hiring employees to staff your site around the clock.

Our shopping cart will deliver the ultimate online shopping experience to your customers. Navigating through your merchandise offerings is a breeze with our shopping cart, the program provides several "Spotlight" lists in addition to the traditional category to product links. Once a product is added to the shopping cart, secure checkout is a simple 3-step process. After providing the billing information, your customer chooses the shipping method. (multiple shipping methods including real-time internet shipping quotes are built-in) Next, a payment type is chosen from one of the popular payment modules. (PayPal™ and AuthorizeNet™ are just 2 of the included modules) Last, the customer reviews the order, shipping and payment choices, and confirms the order. You are immediately notified of the order and your customer automatically receives an e-mail confirmation.

Keywords
The actual words and terms that customers are using to search the Internet for products and services similar to yours.  Keywords are words people looking for your Website might type in. They usually related to your industry, your services and your physical location. (Example) (e-mail Keywords).  Phrases with 2-3 words each (comma separated). Phrase must appear in page content to be relevant. Max: 20 Key Word phrases.

Keywords are terms or phrases that are used by internet users in search engines and web directories in order to find information. In order for website developers to ensure that the user group they are targeting finds their site, they will incorporate these search terms as keywords in their website content, page titles, page descriptions and even the anchor text that appears as a link to their page from another site.

It’s fairly obvious that keywords are important. Other methods of search engine optimization may sometimes be called into question, but you will most likely never encounter an SEO specialist who disputes the importance of keyword optimization.

Keyword optimization is the process used to select the best keywords for a website, and to use those words through each page in order to gain maximum visibility to website traffic and search engines, and maximum ROI (return on investment) from affiliate and Pay Per Click advertising programs.

Let’s take a look at how selecting the best possible keywords can impact your website marketing campaigns:

- Choosing keywords that clearly indicate the theme of the content provided on your site will increase the “opinion” of your site by the major search engine search algorithms.
- Registering your keywords with a program like Google AdSense will increase your chances of having your site appear at the top of the search engine results pages.
- Strong keywords will give you a solid base upon which to build your website text and your page titles and descriptions.

Now that you see why selecting the right keywords is important, we will cover some of the steps that you can follow in order to improve your keyword selection techniques. You may want to try some or all of these suggested techniques when choosing your keywords. If you have existing site content you should take some time to thoroughly read it and then take a blank piece of paper (or blank text document) and jot down a list of ideas that come to mind after reading. Are your keywords among that list? They should be. If they are not on the list you know that a re-evaluation of keyword terms is probably a good idea for your site.

Put yourself in the place of your users and think about what they might enter in a search engine search field in order to find the information. Make a list of these terms. Are your keywords on this list? Are there other items on this list that you might want to consider?

Use a keyword suggestion tool like Google AdWords (https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox) where you can enter keywords or phrases and receive a list of variations and other suggested search terms that might get your even more results! There are other tools available, both for free and for purchase, that will suggest popular and profitable keywords for use on your site.

Use descriptive terms and phrases as keywords and phrases for your site. It’s not necessary to use the title of your site among the keywords because this information is already visible to the search engines. If your site provides a product or service, be certain to include a very general keyword that explains what you do.

Find popular keywords with a service like Overture’s keyword suggestion tool that allows you to enter your proposed keywords and to determine how many searches were performed in a recent time period based on your keywords as search terms.

Don’t rule out phrases when compiling your keyword list! Think about how you search the internet. Which do you use more frequently as search terms, single words or multi-work phrases?

Find out what competitive sites are using in their keyword lists! You have access to this information, and to access it you should go to the site of your competitor and select view- Page Source. You will see their list of keywords and their site description located near the top of the resulting page. There are also tools for this, including WordTracker.

Pick a main keyword for each page of your site, and know that this does not need to be the same for each page on your site. You will need to select a main keyword for optimization among the content of each page after narrowing down your potential list to an actual list of 6-8 keywords.

BE HONEST! Your parents were right when they told you over and over that honesty is the best policy. Perhaps they saw well into the future – because the search engines agree! If you use keywords that are not related to the content of your website, your site will lose credibility with the search engine search mechanism. And considering that your goal in selecting keywords and beginning an SEO campaign is to gain favor among the search engines and to increase traffic, why would you want to lose credibility?

Let’s now take a look at how exactly you can use the keywords in order to optimize your website. You probably realize that you will need to do more than include a list of keywords.

As mentioned about, you will need to pare your list down to six or eight keywords, selecting a primary keyword for each page on your site. Then you will want to use each keyword several times (20-30 in 500 words) throughout your site.

It’s important not to overload your site with keywords, but rather to use your keywords as part of the site’s text in a natural manner. If you do overload the content with your keywords you will again lost favor with the search engines.

Now that you have a good idea about what keywords are, why they are important and how to incorporate them into your site – you are well on your way to using keyword optimization, the key for website promotion.

All of this traffic is automated and managed by programs called mailing list managers (MLMs).

Maintenance
My Web Consultant will maintain all sites that we create. We can schedule weekly, monthly, annual, or spur of the moment changes. Building and launching your website is only a part of the story. Webmastering is the single most important thing that is either going to make your website a success, or turn it into a failure. That's why we've put WEBMASTERING in BIG letters!!

This is the process that keeps your Website from becoming stale, boring, and outdated. Sections of a Website generally need to be changed/modified on a regular base.  Things that would need to change could be special discount offers and promotions, addition of new product lines, manufacturers or removal of old products.

The maintenance of your site is very important. As information changes or updating needs to occur, it is important that you quickly and accurately post these changes. Broken links or misinformation can give an unprofessional impression to visitors and weaken business. We do have a maintenance contract where you pay one set fee each month.

Malware

The key to measuring a website success, one has to be able to accurately define what it is they really need to measure in order to determine how their site performs. To simplify this task we have provided you with a list of possible factors that can be tracked to assist you in calculating your Website's success:

  • You want to know how many visitors visit your site.
  • You want to know how many visitors are visiting as the result of a particular ad.
  • You want to know of your regular site visitors (non ad related), how many request more information.
  • You want to know how many site visitors contact directly by telephone (inbound calls)

MetaTags
Meta elements are HTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page. Such elements must be placed as tags in the head section of an HTML document.

MetaTags are used as part of your HTML code. Some "Spiders" use the information contained within MetaTags to index your Web page. In most cases a Spider will grab only the first few words, sentences or paragraphs and use those words as the description and keywords for your Web page. MetaTags on the other hand tell the Spider what information to use.

When properly constructed you can actually control how these robots display your Web page in their search engines. We're sure you have used a search engine in the past and found the description to be anything but informative. With MetaTags you can have the robot display your Web page description the way you want it displayed (within reason of course). You can also help people find your Web page by providing keywords that describe your page and help drive traffic to your Website.

When done properly, search engine submission can be the only promotion your Website ever needs. Proper search engine submission involves much more than just clicking the submit button.

If you had a friend or a professional website design company make your website for you, they may have forgotten your Metatags. Without these Metatags your website, when submitted it may be lost or "buried" within the search engine.

Metatags informs the search engine about your site through special code.  My Web Consultant has made it easy!
